I found this ad for my boat. Well mine is a 65 but close enough. Also the model name of my boat is Cobra, so that’s cool. It is a challenge tho because Google result Starcraft Cobra are 100% Shelby cobras, and the Blizz ard RTS game.

Kinja'd!!!

I had the engine running in a trash bin this morning and confirmed the water pump works. Still running pretty rough, but I found out I used about double the amount of 2 stroke oil suggested so that could be part of the problem. Whoops. Also thanks to the Internet I just ordered a owners manual for my Johnson Super Seahorse (I laugh every time I say that name.) the factory outboard on the boat.

Was social distancing a thing back then?  ‘Cause the girls seem to prefer to sit in the back....

I had a 76 Johnson. That thing will run forever with a bit of love. Rebuild the carbs, new plugs, and some fresh gas. That’s all mine ever needed after 40 plus years of abuse before it got into my hands.

You’d let a women sit in the front of  the boat?

That’s wild.

Oh I’m sure the engine itself is strong. It seems to have good compression. Ideals decent, but once you try to give it some throttle and get it into great it’ll die. Altho when I was just running it off a hose, without the prop in the water it didn’t do that.

No Cobra model listed 1965- 67. I’m going to say you actually do have a 1964.

That’s load versus no load. I’d bet you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Carb rebuild should set you straight. I had that same issue and I’m pretty certain it was because I screwed up the carb rebuild.

Among other things, you’ll want a spare set or two of spark plugs in spares kit on the water. Back in the day when my family had old, two-stroke carbureted outboards, an on the water spark plugs change happened more than once over the years.
